This towering sun worshipper is a grand site in any garden. Grown for more than two centuries, this Russian heirloom has 30cm flowerheads and grows to 3m tall. The flower heads provide a huge number of seeds that are highly nutritious. Dry the seed, remove the husk and eat them yourself or feed them whole to your chooks. The seeds and petals are edible. Sow into pots to transplant later or direct into garden in a sunny spot. Keep seedlings well watered, and feed sparingly with liquid fertiliser once established. May need staking for support in windy areas. Can take up to 90 days to flower.
